It is recommended that all Registered Somatic Movement Educators and/or Therapists are aware of the state regulation on the use of ‘touch’ for the state(s) they are practicing in. Each state can create requirements, but not all states do. These regulations MAY apply to ISMETA members, however some states have written in exemptions for some forms of Somatic Movement. In addition, some counties have different regulations within a state. Thorough research and periodic updates are necessary to remain aware of the regulations in your area.
How to find out if your state has regulations for ISMETA Professionals:
1. Search for state massage regulation in the state you practice in (see websites below)
2. Look for the definition of massage within the text of the law
3. Look for exemption language specific to your field or practice
The following websites have information on state massage law regulations. ISMETA includes these websites as a resource for our members, and does not endorse the use of any nor guarantee the accuracy of the information found there.
